Yes you do have "those buttons" (that key) on your keyboard.

Hold the shift key down and press the key that looks like this

. You'll find it just above the ENTER and just below the
Backspace key.

|8x+9| + 3 = 8

Add -3 to both sides

    |8x+9| = 5

Since both |5|=5 and |-5|=5 this breaks into two equations:

8x+9 = 5   and   8x+9 = -5 
  8x = -4          8x = -14
   x =            x = 
   x =            x = 

Those are the two solutiuons.
