Question 712492: I had a problem on a math quiz that was similar to this: 4-2|3x+4|=6 I was just wondering if you can explain how to solve a problem like this. How would I deal with the 4-2 in front of the absolute value?

4 - 2|3x + 4| = 6
-2|3x + 4| = 2 {subtracted 4 from each side}
|3x + 4| = -1 {divided each side by -2

= no solution

Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero. Distance cannot be negative.
In this case, that's why there is no solution.
