Two possibilities. Either 6x-8 is positive (or zero) or it is negative. Test solve for each case.

6x-8>0;
|6x-8|=6x-8>12,
6x=12+8
6x=20
3x=10
x=10/3.

6x-8<0;
|6x-8|=-(6x-8) [examine that very carefully]
-(6x-8)=12
-6x+8=12
8-6x=12
-6x=4
x=-4/6
x=-2/3
