/2x + 4/ = 12 [since x can be either positive or negative, you need two conditions]
.
Either:
2x+4=12
2x=12-4
2x=8
x=4
or
2x+4=-12
2x=-12-4
2x=-16
x=-8
.
Check by plugging either (x=4) or (x=-8) back into the original equation:
/2(4)+4/=12
/8+4/=12
/12/=12
12=12 [checks out]

/2(-8)+4/=12
/-16+4/=12
/-12/=12
12=12 [also checks out]
