Okay, so when you are solving absolute value try using this tip I learned. Don't stress over the variable think of it like this.
Some STUFF - 12 AND some STUFF - 8 is 5. Write a compound sentence and work it out from there. Once you solve use guess and check... I think this is correct, hope this helped a little bit!
