We need to make the denominators the same in order to combine the fractions, so we get
5/x+2 - 8/x+4 =
5(x+4) / (x+2)(x+4) - 8(x+2) / (x+2)(x+4) =
5(x+4) - 8(x+2) / (x+2)(x+4) =
(5x + 20 - 8x - 16) / (x+2)(x+4) =
(-3x + 4) / (x+2)(x+4)
and we're done...
