abs%28y-8%29%2B6=15 Start with the given equation


abs%28y-8%29=9 Subtract 6 from both sides.


Break up the absolute value (remember, if you have abs%28x%29=a, then x=-a or x=a)

y-8=-9 or y-8=9 Set the expression y-8 equal to the original value 9 and it's opposite -9




Now lets focus on the first equation y-8=-9


y=-9%2B8Add 8 to both sides


y=-1 Combine like terms on the right side






Now lets focus on the second equation y-8=9



y=9%2B8Add 8 to both sides


y=17 Combine like terms on the right side





So the solutions to abs%28y-8%29%2B6=15 are:

y=-1 and y=17
