You can put this solution on YOUR website!

abs%28x-1%29-1=7 Start with the given equation

abs%28x-1%29=8 Add 1 to both sides.

Break up the absolute value (remember, if you have abs%28x%29=a, then x=-a or x=a)

x-1=-8 or x-1=8 Set the expression x-1 equal to the original value 8 and it's opposite -8

Now lets focus on the first equation x-1=-8

x=-8%2B1Add 1 to both sides

x=-7 Combine like terms on the right side

Now lets focus on the second equation x-1=8

x=8%2B1Add 1 to both sides

x=9 Combine like terms on the right side

So the solutions to abs%28x-1%29-1=7 are:

x=-7 or x=9
