Remember that the absolute value of a number is just the distance that number is (in whole units) from zero. Since distance is a positive value (it wouldn't make sense if it were negative), the absolute value of ANY number is ALWAYS positive. So if you drew a number line and counted from 0 to -111, you'll find that the distance between the two numbers is 111 units. So
