Question 269584: I need help in an absolute-value word problem. I Am not sure how to translate it.
Here goes:
- Jessica can choose between two summer jobs. She can work as a checker in a discount store for $8.40 an hour, or she can mow the lawns for 12.00 an hour. In order to mow lawns, she must buy a $450 lawnmower. how many hours of labor will it take jessica to make more money mowing the lawns?
I tried these solutions: 8.40 + 12x=450 and 8.40<450x< 12 but, i don't think neither is correct. Please help

Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-450+12X>8.40X
12X-8.40X>450
3.6X>450
X>450/3.6
X>125 HOURS MOWING @ $12 PER HOUR IS NEEDED TO EQUAL THE CHECKER JOB @ $8.40 PER HOUR.
PROOF:
LET THE HOURS MOWING BE 126.
-450+12*126>8.40*126
-450+1,512>1,058.4
1,062>1,058.4
