Let's look at the definition of absolute value:
When you read this definition, read
as "the opposite" of
rather than "negative"
or "minus"
. I find it much less confusing to think of it in this way.
Part b is
. In part a of the problem we established that
must be a positive real number. Looking at the definition of absolute value -- if the thing inside of the absolute value bars is positive, then the value of the absolute value function is identical to the value of the thing inside. Since
