Question 237624: what is a test value to determine whether or not a problem is a solution?
Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
what is a test value to determine whether or not a problem is a solution?
-------------
If you had the inequality x < -2
a test value could be ANY number.
If you select x = 7 you would substitute that for x and see if you
get a true statement. For example,
7 < -2
That is not true so you would conclude that 7 is not in the solution
set for the inequality.
--
Further, since you might realize that 7 is greater than -2 you
could conclude that ANY number greater than -2 is not in the
solution set.
----------------------
Bottom Line: The test number can be ANY number. You substitute it
and see if it works. If it doesn't, it's not in the solution set.
