24/36 = x/3 Solve for x
x = 24*3/36 = 72/36 = 2
The method used is called the method of proportions. When an "inverse proportion" is set up in fractional form,the numerator of the first ratio must correspond to the denominator in the second ratio. The denominator of the first ratio must correspond to the numerator of the second ratio. Note that this paragraph does NOT apply to problems involving "direct relationships".
So in the setup above,"24" corresponds to "3" and "x" corresponds to "36".
