Question 155800: We need help with a problem in an 8th grade Pre-Algebra book. The directions are to simplify the following: -||-4| + |-21||
What do the double brackets mean? Thanks for your help.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
simplify the following: -||-4| + |-21||
This is what it looks like to me:
-[|-4| + |-21|]
------------------
If that is true you have "absolute value" terms;
you do not have double brackets.
-----------------------
= -[4 + 21]
= - 25
