For problems in one variable, you need to isolate the variable on one side of the equation.
Given:
First collect the terms containing the variable on one side and the constant terms on the other side. To do this, subtract 2x from both sides and then subtract (-7) from both sides. Think of the equal sign as a 'balance' point. Whatever you do to one side, you have to do to the other in order to remain in balance.

Now isolate the variable, by dividing both sides by 7

Now check your answer by substituting for x in the original equation.

or

(Actually, if you have |a|=|b|, then
a = b, or
-a = b, or
a = -b, or
-a = - b
But the first and fourth situations are equivalent, and the second and third situations are equivalent, so you really only have two different situations.)

You should check these answers by substituting them into the original equation to see if doing so results in true statements.
