Question 1207533: A fish descends 4 meters per
minute for 2 minutes. Then it
ascends 3 meters per minute for 3
minutes. What is the total
distance, in meters, the fish
traveled?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the fish descends 4 meters per minute for 2 minutes.
that's 8 meters lower than when the fish started.

the fish then ascends 3 meters per minute for 3 minutes.
that's 9 meters higher than when the fish started.

the fish goes down 8 and then up 9.
the fish ends up 1 meter higher than when the fish started.

the total distance traveled by the fish was 17 meters.

the total displacement of the fish was 1 meter higher than when the fish started.

here's a reference.
