This equation

    | q - 8 | = 14


tells you that the number q in the number line is 14 units from the number 8.


There are 2 (two, TWO) such numbers:  8+14 = 22  and  8-14 = -6.


So, your answer is these two numbers,  q= -6  and  q= 22.
