is units from zero to the left, and is units from zero to the right: so, if you start at point on the number line, you need to go units to the right to get to the point on the number line

The distance  " d "  between the numbers  -4  and  2  in number line is


    d = | 2 - (-4) | = | 2 + 4 | = |6 | = 6.


The same distance can be calculated in other way


    d = | (-4) - 2 | = | -6 | = 6.


The answer is the same, independently on the way you calculate it . . .
