Question 1136944: A steel bar at a temperature of 300 degrees C has the length of L. If the temperature of the bar is raised or lowered 100 degrees C, its length will increase or decrease by 0.12%, respectively. Write an absolute value equation for the maximum and minimum lengths of the bar when it is heated to 400 degrees C or cooled to 200 degrees C.

.
This absolute value equation is

    |x -L| = 0.0012*L.

Here x is the length of the steel bar at temperature 400°C (= 100°C above 300°C),

       or the length of the steel bar at temperature 200°C  (= 100°C below 300°C);

L is the length of the bar at 300°C (designation introduced in the condition);

and 0.0012 = 0.12%.
