Your equation is THIS :


|x - 5.5| = 3.5.    (*)


Notice that 5.5 is the mid-point between 2 and 9:   5.5 = ,


and the equation (*)  says that the points x= 2  and  x= 9  are equally remoted at the distance of  3.5  from their mid-point.


Also notice that  3.5 is the half of the distance 9-2 = 7 between the given points (the given values)  x= 2  and  x= 9.
