when you square a number, you are multiplying it by itself.

when you take the square root of a number, you are finding the number that, when squared, is equal to the number.

these are opposite sides of the same coin.

an example:

2^2 is equal to 2 * 2 which is equal to 4

square root of 4 is 2 because 2 * 2 = 4.
