: Rewrite the absolute value equation as two linear equations.
20.) |5n-4|=16
I'm not sure where to start in the problem. I know that absolute value is the distance the number is from 0. But I'm at a lost as to where to start and how to put it into two linear equations.

Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
|5n-4|=16
5n-4=16 this part is just like a regular equation.
5n=16+4=20
n=4
.
5n-4=-16 Why change 16 to -16? because the numbers inside the absolute box are just as likely to equate to -16 as 16.
5n=-16+4=-12
n=-12/5
.
Check
for n=4: |5*4-4|=16
for n=-12/5: |(5*-12/5)-4|=|-12-4|=16
Got it?
