Question 189329: I am trying to find the volume of a composite figure. The figure Is a cylinder that is 3 inches in height and 3 inches in length. Attached to one end of the cylinder is a cone which is 2 inches in length. The book wants me to find the volume of the composite figure. The following is what I've tried.
V= pi(r)to the power of 2 x H.
V= pi (3)to the power of 2 x 3 + 1/2 x 4/3 pi (2) to the power of 3.
V= pi (9)(3) + 2/3 pi (8)
V= 27 pi + 16.76 pi = 43.76pi.
So the answer would of been 43.76 pi. My teacher tells me this is wrong. So, I guess I need a new method for working this problem, and information to help me understand this topic better. Can you help??
Thanks

Question 190094: My teacher did this example:
Volume=500 cubic inches
500=S^3
500^1/3=(s^3)1/3=s^1=s
500^1/3=s
3.648 in.=s
Can you please tell how he put 500^1/3 in the calculator and got 3.648 in. for the answer. I've put it in the calculator so many times and I can't seem to get the same answer.

Question 191327: A 20 cm pencil is in the shape of a cylinder. When the pencil is sharpened, the tip is a cone with a height of 4cm. Since the volume of a cone is one-third that of a cylinder with the same height and radius, Sean has calculated that about 13% of the volume of the pencil was removed in the sharpening. Was his calculation correct? Show your work.
With my calculations, I got a radius of approx. 1.4 cm. Is this correct? Is the 20 cm the height of the whole pencil?

Question 195543: How should I do this problem; I don't know how to get the answer. I do know that the formula to find a sphere's volume is V=Bh & "big b" is the area of the base, or pi times the radius squared. I do not recall doing this problem type in class. This is the problem:
The ratio between the volumes of two spheres is 27 to 8. What is the ratio between their respective radii?
A: 81:64
B: 9:8
C: 3:2
D: 27:16

Question 196428: I am doing test corrections on our chapter test of volume and density, and this is the only problem that I still do not understand. I know that the ratio we have to figure out will be a comparison between the different bases, and it would be figured out with something along the lines of B(1)=B(.5), but I don't understand how you would figure out the exact numbers of the ratio.
A filter apparatus is submerged in fish tank A, raising the water level 1 cm. When the same filter is submerged in fish tank B, the water level is raised only 0.5 cm. If the fish tanks have the same water level without a filter, what is the ratio of the area of the water surface of tank A to the area of the water surface of tank B?
