Question 999550: a rectangular tank,50cm long and 30cm wide, contains water upto a height of 9 cm.a box of dimensions 25cm,25cm,20cm is now placed in the tank so that its square faces rest on the bottom of the tank. the quantity of the water that must be poured into the tank in order to just cover the box is .....with detailed solution

presumably the box will be enclosed so that it doesn't contain any water.
without the box, the volume of water in the tank is 50 * 30 * 9 = 13500 cubic cm.
in order for the tank to be filled to a height of 25 cm, the tank would have to have a volume of 50 * 30 * 25 = 37500 cubic cm of water.
the box itself displaces a volume of water equal to 25 * 25 * 25 = 15625 cubic cm.
to fill the tank to 25 cm height, then the volume of water required is 37500 minus 15625 = 21875.
since the volume of water in the tank is already 13500, then the amount of water added would have to be 21875 - 13500 = 8375 cubic cm.
