They're similar in that you take 1/3 of the volume of a different figure.

For a cone, you take 1/3 of the volume of a cylinder.
For a pyramid, you take 1/3 of the volume of a rectangular prism.

The two are different in that the cone has a circular base while the pyramid has a polygonal base (example: a pyramid of Egypt has a rectangular base)
