What would the dimensions of a rectangular box need to be to hold 42,000 gallons of fluid (oil)? If the height is 3 feet, what would the width and length have to be?
---------------------------------------------------------

V = L*W*H

42000 = L*W*3

42000/3 = L*W

14000 = L*W

L*W = 14000

Unfortunately we don't have enough information to continue. However, we do know that the area of the base must be 14000 square feet. So if the length was 700 ft for instance, then the width must be 14000/700 = 20 ft to guarantee that the area of the base is 14000 square feet. There are infinitely many combinations like this which is why there is no set answer (unless we have more info).
