Question 753228: The sides are folded up creating a topless box. The particular box has a square base a height of 10cm and a volume of 4000 cubic cm. for this particular box what must have bee the original dimensions of the sheet of cardboard
Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The Volume = 4000 cm^3
Divide this by the height 10 cm.
and you find the area of the base = 400cm^2
As it is a square base, square root 400 = 20 cm.
Therefore you have length = 20cm., breadth = 20cm.
and height 10cm.
Working out the surface area, the box would have 4
sides of 20cm x 10cm = 800cm^2, and 1 bottom of 20cm x 20cm
= 400cm^2.
This would give you a total surface area of 1200cm^2
but the original sheet of cardboard would be 40cm x 40cm
before the 4 corners of 100 cm^2 were taken out leaving you
with 1600cm^2 - 400cm^2 = 1200cm^2.(The box's surface area.)
