imagine a cube... divide the lengths in half and visualise the cubes that are now made up, within the original. You should have 8 smaller cubes making up the larger one.
So, halving each length generates one of these smaller cubes...1 of 8, so this is the fraction. Or, to answer the question, the volume has been reduced by 7/8ths --> (7/8)*100 = 87.5%
The hardest part of this is the English. We have 2 answers depending upon being asked:
reduced by how many percent? --> (7/8)*100
reduced to how many percent? --> (1/8)*100
So, be careful of the wording.
