Let x be the volume of the second part.

Then the volume of the first part is .


From the condition, we have this equation


    x +  = 36  cubic feet   (the total volume).

or

     +  = 36

     = 36

     = 36

    x =  = 5*4 = 20  cubic feet.


Thus, the second part volume is 20 cubic feet;  the first part volume is   = 16 cubic feet.    ANSWER


CHECK.  20 + 16 = 36  cubic feet, the total volume.    ! correct !

Another way to set up the problem for solving, without fractions....

Given that the volume of the left cabinet is 4/5 the volume of the right cabinet, let the volumes of the two cabinets be 4x and 5x. Then

4x+5x=36
9x=36
x=4

ANSWER: The volumes of the two cabinets are 4x=16 and 5x=20 cubic feet.
