One foot is 12 inches.
One cubic foot is 12inch*12inch*12inch=1728 cubic inches.
The stack contains 1728 of these 1-inch cubes.

Each 1-inch high layer from the original 1 cubic foot cube contains 144 of these smaller cubes, and there would be 1728 of these small cubes to stack.
