Question 1042777: A sleeve of 3 tennis balls is sold in a tightly packed cylindrical container wherein the tennis balls touch the top, sides, and bottom of the can. If the radius of one tennis ball is r, what is the total number of sleeves that can be shipped in a box 3r by 6r by 12r?
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The diameter of each ball is r*2 = 2r. So each ball is 2r high and 2r wide
3 balls stacked one on top of the other:
3(2r) = 6r is the height of 3 balls
If your box is 3r wide, since the balls are 2r wide you can only get one sleeve in 3r
If your box is 6r long, you can get 3 sleeves (6r/2r= 3)
If your box is 12r tall, you can get 12r/2r = 6 balls. Since each sleeve has 3 ball stacked up one on top of the other, you can get 2 sleeves one on top of the other in your box.
3*2 = 6 sleeves in each box (3 deep, 2 high, 1 wide)
