Question 984520: A pilot is flying at an air speed of 241mph in a wind blowing 20.4mph from the east. In what direction must the pilot head in order to fly due north? What is the pilots speed relative to the ground?
(Round the bearing to the nearest tenth of a degree and the speed to the nearest tenth of a mph.)
Enter your answer as (bearing, compass direction, speed), where compass direction is either E or W and the bearing is given in degrees.
Thank you kindly.

A pilot is flying at an air speed of 241mph in a wind blowing 20.4mph from the east. In what direction must the pilot head in order to fly due north? What is the pilots speed relative to the ground?
----------------
Make a right triangle.
The hypotenuse is 241 at some angle East of due North.
The wind is the short leg 20.4 in length.
Use Pythagoras to find the groundspeed.
mi/hr
-------------
The small angle = asin(20.4/241) =~ 4.856 degs
--> A heading = 4.9 (due North is 360 or 000 degs)
