The abscissa of a point is -6 and its distance from the point (1,3)is square root 74. Find the 2 values of the distance of the point.
----------------
If the abscissa is -6 the point is (-6,y); find y.
-----------
If distance to (1,3) = sqrt74,
sqrt[(-6-1)^2+(y-3)^2]=sqrt74
7^2+(y-3)^2=74
(y-3)^2=74-49
(y-3)^2=25
y-3=5 or y-3=-5
y=8 or y=-2
Two points, (-6,8) and (-6,-2), are at a distance of sqrt(74) from (1,3)
