Question 7703: A belt passes over the rim of a flywheel, 20 inches in diameter. What is the linear speed of the belt if it drives the wheel at the rate of 50 revolutions per minute. (The speed of the belt is the same as that of a point on the rim)
Answer by prince_abubu(198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The circumference of the flywheel would be given by pi * d, in this case, 3.14159 * 20 which is 62.8318 inches. In other words, in one rev, or one time all the way around, the belt "gives away" or "spits out" or "passes" 62.8318 inches. If there are 50 revs (or 50 times that it goes all the way around) in one minute, then we multiply the 62.8318 by the 50 revs to get 3141.59 inches per minute.
