Best way to solve this is using the quadratic equation:

Plug in the numbers:
{x = (-3 +- sqrt( 9-4*(-2)*8 ))/(2*(-2) }
Answer is:
x=(3+sq rt 73)/-4
x=(3-sq rt 73)/-4
