A force of 100 pounds pulls a car on a track and makes an angle of 32 degrees with the track. To the nearest tenth, what is the force, in pounds, in the direction of the track?

Draw out the problem, and you'll see that a right triangle forms with an angle of 32 degrees and the hypotenuse is 100. We want to find the unknown adjacent side

So

cos(angle) = adjacent/hypotenuse

cos(32) = x/100

100*cos(32) = x

x = 100*cos(32)

x = 100*0.848048096156426

x = 84.8048096156426

x = 84.8 (round to the nearest tenth)

Therefore, the force in the direction of the track is roughly 84.8 pounds
