Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Suppose you live about 5.1 miles from a tower.
from your home you see a plane directly above the tower.
your angle of elevation to the plane is 21 degrees.
what is the planes altitude?
:
You can use the tangent of 21 degrees,
side opposite is the altitude in miles (a)
side adjacent is the dist to the tower (5.1 mi)
:
= tan(21)
a = tan(21) * 5.1
put this in a calc and you get
a = 1.9577 mi or 1.9577(5280) = 10,336.7 ft
