Question 322061: I am so lost on this problem. If a baseball is hit a a 36 degree angle from 3 f above the ground with a velocity of 75 mph, how long is the ball in the air and how far from home plate will the ball land?
Here is what I have tried so far: v=110 ft/sec A=36 degree h=3 t = unknown
For the motion of a projectile: x = (v cos A)t and y =-16t^2+(v sin A)t+h
x = (110)(.8090)t x ~ 88.9919t
But what does that tell me? Can you please describe in detail how to solve this problem. I would appreciate the help so much.
Answer by galactus(183) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You have it. You just need to finish. The 88.99t tells you how far the ball travels, where t is the time in seconds.
Let's find how far it goes. Then, the time it takes to land gets entered into 88.99t to find how far it went. x is the horizontal distance and y is the vertical distance.
Set this to 0 and solve for t to find how long it takes to land.
This is a quadratic. Solving, we find t=4.087 seconds. The other solution is extraneous.
Now, to find how far it went, 88.99(4.087)=363.69 feet.
Here is a graph of the projectile motion of the baseball.
