 I am stuck on this problem where I need to solve for X.
(tan^-1) 2x= -pi/6
----
That equation says "the angle whose tangent is 2x is -pi/6"
Find the tangent of both sides to get:
2x = tan(-pi/6)
2x = -1/sqrt(3)
---
x = -1/(2sqrt(3)

 =-\frac{\pi}{6}) ... Start with the given equation.
 ... Start with the given equation.
) ... Take the tangent of both sides to eliminate the inverse tangent.
 ... Take the tangent of both sides to eliminate the inverse tangent.
}{\cos\left(-\frac{\pi}{6}\right)}) ... Break up the tangent into sine over cosine
 ... Break up the tangent into sine over cosine
}) ... Evaluate the sine of to get
 ... Evaluate the sine of to get
 ... Evaluate the cosine of to get
 ... Evaluate the cosine of to get
\left(\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}\right)) ... Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
 ... Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
 ... Multiply and simplify
 ... Multiply and simplify
 ... Rationalize the denominator of the fraction on the right side.
 ... Rationalize the denominator of the fraction on the right side.
 ... Divide both sides by 2.
 ... Divide both sides by 2.
So the solution is
