Question 228233: How do I solve this word problem? " A new car was advertised for 12.5% off original price. The sale price was $14,599. What was the original price?
Answer by JenniferTutors(83) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To find the original price, first you know that the percentage for discount is 12.5% out of 100%, so to find the discounted price of the original you would subtract 12.5 from 100 to get 87.5.
Now, this number we will use in this equation:
x SP= sale price
(14,599) x (1.14286} Don't round up here, keep the numbers.
(14,599)(1.14286) = (16,684.61)
Now to check the answer if it's correct:
(16,684x.125=14599)
You might have a few cents after 14,599 but it's okay.
