Answer by ikleyn(52818) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
"how far" depends on how you measure, or determine, or define it.
The shortest distance along a straight line is the hypotenuse of the right angled triangle,
and you can find it applying the Pythagorean theorem.
But if you measure it as the distance to travel along the roads (the highways),
then the distance is the sum of legs.
This "problem" does not make the difference between a True Math problem and a puzzle - - - therefore it admits different answers,
which NEVER may happen with a True Math .
As worded, posted, formulated and presented, it is a typical puzzle and a provocation, instead of to be a Math problem.

I see it every day at this forum, that the visitors who post (compose) problems to the forum,
simply don't know the difference between the puzzles and Math problems, or intently hit this difference to confuse the readers.
It is not the way to teach Math.
. . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . .
For me as a car's driver, the shortest way is the way I know the best . . .
