when the two inequalities are graphed; the lines will cross, dividing the graph into four sections

two of the sections will satisfy one of the inequalities; and two of the sections will satisfy the other inequality

the section that satisfies BOTH inequalities gets shaded

to test if an inequality is satisfied; pick a point in a section of the graph and see if it works in the inequality
