the base of a triangle has the same length as a side of a square.
the second side of the triangle is 2 inches longer than the base, and the third side is 6 inches longer than the base.
if the perimeter of the triangle equals that of the square, find the longest side of the triangle.
:
let x = the side of the triangle that is the also the side of the square
then
(x+2) = the 2nd side of the triangle
nad
(x+6) = the 3rd side
:
perimeter equation
4x = x + (x+2) + (x+6)
combine like terms
4x = 3x + 8
4x - 3x = 8
x = 8 is the length of the base
and
8 + 6 = 14 is the length of the longest side of the triangle
