Draw a line inside a triangle parallel to one of the sides and you will see that it divides each of the other two sides into 2 parts. The ratio of lengths of one part over the other is the same ratio as that of the other side. For example, if the ratio of the smaller part to the larger part is 1/3 for one of the sides, the same ratio will apply to the smaller and larger parts of the other side. If the parallel line cuts one of the sides in half so will the other side be cut in half.
