(In triangle GHK, a segment drawn from vertex G to the opposite side creates a 90 degree angle with the opposite side. what is the best name for this type of segment?) please explain your answer so i am able to understand how you did this, thank you.

Your description of the segment is "altitude". If you use segment HK as a base, then the segment you described is how tall is the triangle from your point G to the base, HK.
