Question 711269: Hi, I had a math test today and we were allowed to go back and finish up since our class period was shortened. There was one problem I did not understand and it went something like this:
Find the like of the third side of the obtuse triangle with the longest side 36 and one of the legs 4.
(Those numbers were just made up)
I know that c^2 > a^2 + b^2 then the triangle is obtuse. But I also know that to find the range of the third side you would need to do: a + b = d and a - b = e, leaving you with e < x < d (Let x be any number within the given range). I just don't know how to find the range for the obtuse triangle. Thank you so much!

Find the like of the third side of the obtuse triangle with the longest side 36 and one of the legs 4.
(Those numbers were just made up)
--------------
Do you mean length?
It has to be less than the sum of 36 & 4, < 40
----
To be obtuse, s^2 > 36^2 + 4^2
--> s > sqrt(1312)
-----------------------------
sqrt(1312) < s < 40
