Question 708292: I have a triangle with an 18 inch perimeter, and one 8 inch side. What are the lengths of the remaining two sides if their ratio is 2:3?
Answer by josgarithmetic(39628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You could draw and label a triangle, one side is 8, other sides are x and y. and since x/y is 2/3, you can also make the equations:
Perimeter given as 18, so ,
and since ratio of the two other sides to each other, x/y=2/3, gives you.
Substitute that last formula for x into the perimeter equation, and solve for y; then calculate for x. You could choose other ways to solve for x and y, but that one may be simplest.
If done as I suggested, find. y=6.
