Question 661227: If the length of one leg of a right triangle is x+2, and the length of the hypotenuse is x+3, where x>-2, what is the length of the other leg in terms of x?
I have difficulty setting the equation up, someone please explain! Much help is appreciated.
Answer by htmentor(1343) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s = the length of the other leg
Then using the Pythagorean theorem, we can write
(x+3)^2 = (x+2)^2 + s^2
s^2 = x^2 + 6x + 9 - x^2 - 4x - 4
s^2 = 2x + 5
So the length of the other side is
