1) I started working this problem as a) b) c) ...a) being the shortest side. and c) is the base would be the middle ..correct?
area= (1/2) base*height
area= (1/2)(x-2yft)(x+4yft.)
area= (1/2)(x^+ .................This is where I start getting confused.
Please help?

c = the long side, the hypotenuse
a & b are the other 2 sides, which you call the base doesn't matter.

Area = b*h/2 = a*b/2
----

That's all you can do, no reduction is possible.
