Question 565846: How to find out the missing side(base) length of a scalene triangle? I am in 6th grade so please explain in a easy way. The other side lenghts are 35cm and 45cm.
Answer by KMST(5328)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A scalene triangle is a triangle with three sides of different lengths.
If all we know about a triangle is that the lengths of two of the sides are 35 cm and 45 cm, there are infinite possibilities for the length of the other side.
All you can say is that the other side is longer than cm,
and that it is shorter than cm. (Otherwise the third side would be too short or too long to close the triangle).
If someone says the triangle is scalene, then you also know that the third side cannot be either 35 cm long or 45 cm long, but you still have infinite possibilities for the length of the third side.
If you knew the measure of some angle, we could do more, but it would be a problem more difficult than what I expect for 6th grade.
Now, if you told me that the triangle is a right triangle, with a 90 degree angle, the problem is easier and the choices are narrower. I would ask if you know where the 90 degree angle is in relation to the three sides. If you know what side is opposite a 90 degree angle in a triangle with sides 35 cm long and 45 cm long, you can find the length of the third side using Pythagoras' theorem.
If you sent me a thank you with further questions through this website, I would get to see the email you used to register, and I could send an answer to that email. Otherwise I would not know how to contact you, and you would not know how to contact me. You could also repost the problem with more data, if you have any more details. I probably would not see it, but someone else may chose to answer it.
